International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative backed by all ITU Member States. It aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This initiative is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of April and the Universal Service Fund Office (USFO) under the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) will once again join ITU in this global initiative.
One of the main objectives of the Universal Service Fund is bridging the digital divide by ensuring the availability of efficient and affordable telecommunications services, encourage efficient access, provide support for the introduction and expansion of telecommunications services and promote technological innovation in the telecommunications sector.
To raise awareness and spark the interest of girls throughout St. Lucia, the USFO is hosting a two-day robotics workshop on Thursday 25 th and Friday 26th April 2019 at the Vieux-Fort ICT Centre. Our target group for this year are female Secondary School students from the south of the island. Students will participate in discussions focused on robotics and will be taught using the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Kit. The EV3 kit is a robotics kit designed by LEGO with a student friendly building design, easy to organize, and includes an intuitive block-based programming language for programming the robots. Students will receive a basic exposure to robotics as well as an introduction into programming. Through robotics students will develop an array of skills including designing, problem solving, algorithmic thinking and teamwork.
